The units below focus on approaches to creative writing for students in Middle School (years 6-10). They are written for a specific year level and ACARA outcomes, but most are easily adaptable to other year levels and other assessment frameworks.

The capacity to create persuasive texts is a valuable skill and even more important is the awareness of how others seek to persuade us through the power of language both written and spoken and the powerful manipulation of visual imagery.

Persuading the unconvinced i s appropriate for year 7 and above. Students are supported to understand the variety of forms in which persuasive texts can be presented, through reading and comparing different variations of persuasive writing. Examples include advertising, letters to the editor, politics, images, essay writing … Students construct a piece of persuasive writing using the forms, structures and linguistic features of persuasive writing learnt in the unit.

Writing to persuade: Every day we are confronted with images, articles, speeches and videos seeking to influence our decisions and make us adopt certain beliefs. It is important for students to recognise when people are aiming to persuade them and be able to reflect these qualities in their own work. It is also important that when necessary they can produce such persuasive pieces. Included within the National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing students are asked to write persuasively.In this unit students annotate rhetorical devices in a chosen text, and write notes on the impact of these. They answer the following questions: How does the persuasive writing from your chosen article relate to your life? Why do you think it is important for you to learn persuasive writing skills?Students journal throughout the topic to show deep engagement with the material and are encouraged to include visual content. Students produce their own persuasive text in the form of a letter, advertisement, script for a speech or a film clip. They demonstrate their personal understanding of 'persuasion', along with a producer’s statement in which they discuss the persuasive devices they utilised in the end-point task.

Biographical Writing: Autobiographical and biographical studies are an ideal way for students to experience the life stories of a wide range of people, both those previously unknown or previously admired, and they can relate these stories to their own life experiences. Through the their own choice of text, students will conduct an in depth look of someone they admire and produce an autobiographical piece of work constructed around their own personal story.

Memoir, We all live extraordinary lives: In this unit designed for Year 8, students will explore the art of memoir writing, both through reading a number of different memoirs, and by creating their own. Students will first explore the idea that everyone has a story to tell, and that memoirs are actually a terrific tool for the voiceless to have their opinions heard, before examining the finer details of memoir construction. To conclude the topic, they will attempt to write a short memoir about themselves in order to develop a greater sense of who they are at this time in their lives.
Students will be able to use their experience of working with this genre to:
- Construct texts, both oral and written, for different purposes, with different media tools.
- Critically analyse a number of memoirs for their structural, linguistic, and socio-cultural features.
- Support the communication of their own ideas with evidence from texts
- Convey creativity through text and images, as well as through presenting orally, which may or may not be supported by multimedia.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe: Students (Yr7) will read and analyze the text critically to be able to understand the process of characterization of the main protagonists in the novel. They will discover some approaches to critically deconstruct a text, through analyzing each chapter in depth.
